![]() Welcome to the website for the Vergers' Guild of the Episcopal Church. The VGEC, founded in 1989, exists to support and nurture the office and ministry of verger in the Episcopal Church, USA. Our guild is associated with the Church of England Guild of Vergers and includes members of the Anglican Church of Canada. The work of the verger is a lay ministry of the church, often exercised behind the scenes in support to all of those, ordained and lay, who participate in worship and liturgy. The verger also may be involved with the maintenance of a church building and grounds and support hospitality and outreach ministries.. The verger is often seen wearing a distinctive vesture of simple cassock and modified academic gown. When leading processions the verger usually carries a verger''s wand or verge. The men, women and young people who serve as vergers carry out their ministry in a quiet, dignified and unobtrusive manner. Our guild hopes to identify and support these persons in their ministry and offer opportunities for continuing education through a special training course and an annual four-day conference. Our next conference takes place this fall in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Please feel free to explore and browse our web pages indicated on the left and drop us an email at any time. The membership form is posted for your use as well as other useful information that may be of help to you. More information about the ministry of the verger in your parish or cathedral will be gladly supplied. We invite your comments, suggestions and of course your prayers. God bless you. Thank you for your interest in the Vergers' Guild of the Episcopal Church. Faithfully, David R. Jette |
